Spring Tournaments

This is just a reminder that since we are deep into the tournament, the games must happen in a certain sequence.  As a result inclement weather can make for an interesting schedule for all of us.

Also, please note that sue to a community event at gate City on Friday, April 23, the field is unavailable for softball use.

There is no way to predict all of the possible versions of rescheduling the tournament if some or all of the games get rained out on Friday, Saturday or both.  So, be prepared to be flexible.  We will hustle and publish reschedules as soon as possible so everyone can plan.  However, understand that everyone on the BAU board is a volunteer with work and family obligations just like you.  This means that the schedules may be published very late Friday night, if necessary or Sunday night for Saturday rainouts.

If Friday is a complete washout, all of Friday’s games will be played on Saturday pushing most of the remaining tournament games back to the next weekend.  However, we will want to take advantage of the extra time slot on Saturday.  So, don’t assume that it will just be a straight “same time tomorrow” situation since we will be squeezing an extra game into the revised schedule if at all possible.

Spring Tournaments
We have managed to dodge most of the raindrops all season and had a good start to tournament season.  Weekend results have been updated online.

Summer Wood Bat
The summer Wood Bat season will begin in early July.  Games will be played at Gate City Baptist on Monday evenings.  The entry fee is expected to be the same as the Spring fee at $300 per team.  The entry fee deadline will be Sunday, June 25, 2017 at 9:00PM. (Mail to Tom Pizarro, BAU Treasurer, 7507 End O Trail Rd., Greensboro, NC 27409) Schedules will be published on Monday, June 26.  Depending on how teams feel, we may get started on Monday, July 3.  If most teams prefer not to play due to holiday weekend plans, we will begin on Monday, July 10, 2017

Fall Co-Ed
Please contact Donnie Williams if your church is interested in Fall Co-Ed softball.   If there is enough interest, we get rolling and publish an entry fee deadline in July.  We typically begin Co-Ed play in early August.

The post-season tournament brackets have been completed. Tournament games will begin on Friday, June 2 after the last couple of rain makeup games and continue on June 3.

Four teams were moved between the C1 and C2 divisions for the tournament.:

Greensboro Christian and Lebanon Baptist #1 were moved to C1
Pleasant Garden Baptist and Gate City Baptist were moved to C2.

Teams were subsequently seeded based on final records.   If necessary, ties were broken with head-to-head results and runs scored.

As has been the case in the past, no teams will be moved between B and C divisions for the post season tournament.

Friday, May 19, 2017

The post-season tournament brackets have been completed. .  Tournament games will begin on Friday, June 2 after the last couple of rain makeup games and continue on June 3.  Fully-seeded brackets will be published on Sunday, June 4 which will give everyone 2 weeks advanced notice of the tournament schedule.

Teams will be seeded after the conclusion of games on the weekend of 5/19 & 5/20.

Some teams will likely move between the two C divisions in an effort to rebalance the divisions.  That rebalancing will be done based on the regular season records and other information at hand.  As of right now, it looks like this rebalancing will involve swapping two teams from each to achieve a "best 5, next 5" bracket setup.  So, please DO NOT assume that if you are on C1 right now that you will remain in C1 for the tournament and vice versa.  It would be best to wait until the seeded brackets are published on Sunday, June 4 before making plans.

As has been the case in the past, no teams will be moved between B and C divisions for the post season tournament.

Please remember that there are 3 men’s divisions playing on 1 field.  The first weekend of tournament play has 7 time slots available for tournament play.  There are nine 1st-round games between the 3 divisions.  That means 2 tournament games will not be played the first weekend.

The agenda for the 2017 Spring softball coach's meeting has been posted on the Documents & Forms page.  Please refer to it for meeting time and other important information.

This season the BAU is fully embracing the reality of the changing landscape of adult slow pitch softball.  We all know that participation in adult slow pitch softball has been slowing in recent years.  This is true for all forms of adult slow pitch softball across the nation.  As a result, all league organizers - whether independent like BAU and Christian Fellowship or municipal like Greensboro -have had to make adjustments.

Historically, the BAU has made its best efforts to offer competitive softball in a family-friendly Christian-centered environment at an affordable price.  Costs have increased significantly due to external factors such as municipal field rental and league liability insurance.  Without a minimum threshold of team participation to share the increased costs, the per-team cost has increased accordingly.

Because we need to make financial commitments that are irreversible, the BAU board is making its best attempt to get teams to pre-register as early as possible.  While this pre-registration is not a hard and fast commitment, it will provide the BAU board the information necessary to make decisions regarding field rentals and other necessary infrastructure to operate the league.

If pre-registrations exceed 18 men's teams, the BAU will operate similarly to last season at similar costs and utilizing one city field (likely Rankin) and the field at Gate City Baptist church.  If pre-registration is 18 men's teams or less, the BAU will limit participation to 18 teams and utilize only Gate City for all games.  In this instance, the per-team participation fee will be significantly less (see agenda).

This also means, as in years past, that the Spring coach's meeting will be mandatory!  Without exception.  The entry fees and potential limit on participation will be based on pre-registrations and representation at the coach's meeting.  If you intend to participate you need to have a representative at the meeting.  No exceptions.
